The Curonian Spit

If you are coming to Lithuania, you have to visit the Curonian Spit (Kursiu Nerija). It is one of the most beautiful places in Lithuania. What makes it so special? The dunes. They are an exclusive element of the landscape of the Curonian Spit. Some of the dunes are still drifting. The Curonian Spit is famous for its highest moving sand dunes in Europe. This place is in UNESCO World Heritage List.

Curonian Spit is a narrow strip (maximum width is 3,8 km) of sand stretching 97 kilometers along the Baltic Sea. The eastern shores of the Curonian Spit are washed by the Curonian Lagoon, while the Baltic Sea washes the western shores.

Nida – a unique fishermen village

My favorite village in the Curonian Spit is Nida. Nida is a popular holiday resort among Lithuanians and Germans. The village is unique – it looks like the village of fishermen of 19th century with its wooden houses decorated with wooden carvings. Also Nida has a huge Parnidis dune. You can climb on it and see a wonderful view: dunes, beaches, woods, the Baltic sea, the Curonian Lagoon. If you are visiting Nida, also try fish dishes in local restaurants.

How to reach the Curonian Spit?

The spit is not connected to mainland Lithuania. Ferries provide the transportation link between Smiltyne, located on the spit, and the city Klaipeda. If you are coming with your own car you have to pay a fee for entering the Curonian Spit. So my advice is to go by bus instead. Buses to Nida go from Vilnius and Kaunas. You can also take a ferry from Klaipeda to Smiltyne and then take a bus in Smiltyne.

Another great way to explore the Curonian Spit is by bicycle. The bicycle path is 52 km long, it goes through the woodlands. It’s fun and safe to ride a bicycle in the Curonian Spit.

The Curonian Spit – paradise for bird watchers

Curonian Spit is also a great place for bird watchers, because migration routes run through the Curonian Spit. Once I was in the Curonian Spit in spring and it was great to see flocks of beards coming back to Lithuania.

So if you are coming to Lithuania, I strongly recommend you to spend a few days in the Curonian Spit. If you are staying in Klaipeda, you can take a day trip to the Curonian Spit. Of course one day is not enough to explore all of this wonderful place, so if you have limited time, I recommend you to visit Nida, because this village is really the most interesting.
